The Respiratory System

We saw that the first of the five called Prana vayu (प्राण वायु) controls the chest region and therefore the respiratory system. Naga vayu (नाग वायु) is the upaprana for Prana vayu which helps hick ups etc.

The fist thing that we associate with respiratory problem is cold. Blocked nose. Phlegm related problems and so on. Phlegm troubles comfortable breathing and also hinders easy digestion as the agni necessary to digest is slowed down. When I was young my mother used to say 'agni mandichuduthu' medically they call it agnimandyam.

So the interdependence of prana and samana are clear and they mutually support and affect also.

Therefore, maintaining the respiratory system becomes equally important. What are the simple home recipes for this?

The number three plays a huge role in the Indological studies. The trigunas or tridoshas  or the medicinal combinations like triphala, trikatuka, three is an important number.

We  will see about it in the next post!!

When you learn different languages and when you are into  transliteration of sanskrit - English this happens helplessly. I failed to notice also as it happens for all the non American English words. Thanks Aneetasi Correction made for phlegm :)

  2. Amma,
As you mentioned these 5 vayus when kept/ maintaind properly would resolve half of the problems. But, to identify where the problem is a big issue. Sometimes when one has menstrual cycle, one has severe head-aches/other body aches etc. Is it because these vayus are in a state of imbalance during such times...how to identify the cause to cure?

  3. Short and nice.
Well, when we talk about resuscitation of patient, three components are essential; maintaining airways, breathing and circulation, or easily it could be remembered as ABC's.

From this we know that airway and breathing are important in reviving someone. This is part of the respiratory system. This system starts from nasal cavity until lung.

If i'm not mistaken, pranavayu also known as Oxygen, CO2 known as kariyamila vayu.
Any process that interferes with transport of oxygen to lung units will result it respiratory assault or in extreme cases, respiratory failures.

Anatomically and physiologically, Samana vayu and prana vayu are related. Our nasal cavity connected to oral cavity, where both meet at the level of pharynx. Trachea (windpipe) located in front the esophagus(food passage tube)in neck and chest regions.

This close relationships, explains why we got chocked while swallowing (food bolus enters wind pipe instead of food passage), aspirations of food contents from food passage in to lung causes cough/pneumonia.

Prana vayu (respiratory system) can be divided into upper and lower system. Upper system involves nose, trachea; lower system involves bronchus and alveoli.

Infection of upper system will cause symptoms like runny nose/stuff nose/sore throat/ harsh voice/dry cough.

infection of lower system more dangerous as it interferes with oxygen exchange, thus affect blood oxygenations. Eg. Pneumonia/lung cancers

Swasam is a crucial part maintaining one's life. A lot breathing exercises usually advocated not only to patients but also to normal civilians as it is vital in homeostasis of life. Yoga and meditations proven to help in control of breathing and oxygen consumption.
